Building Blocks for Young Children ’ S Mathematical Development

چکیده
This article describes the design principles behind a set of research-based software microworlds included in the Building Blocks program, a PreK to grade 2 software-based mathematics curriculum. Building Blocks’ approach is finding the mathematics in, and developing mathematics from, children’s activity. The materials are designed to help children extend and mathematize their everyday activities, from building blocks to art to songs and stories to puzzles. The 9-step design process model that defines what we mean by “research-based” is described and illustrated. Building Blocks is a PreK to grade 2 software-based mathematics curriculum development project, designed to comprehensively address the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000). This article describes the design principles behind a set of research-based *This material is based in part upon work supported by the National Science Foundation Research Grants NSF MDR-8954664, “An Investigation of the Development of Elementary Children’s Geometric Thinking in Computer and Noncomputer Environments, and ESI-9730804, “Building Blocks—Foundations for Mathematical Thinking, Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 2: Research-based Materials Development.” Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this publication are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.

This study evaluated the efficacy of a preschool mathematics program based on a comprehensive model of developing research-based software and print curricula. Building Blocks, funded by the National Science Foundation, is a curriculum development project focused on creating research-based, technology-enhanced mathematics materials for pre-K through grade 2. In this article, we describe the unde...
متن کاملBuilding Blocks for early childhood mathematics
Building Blocks is a National Science Foundation-funded project designed to enable all young children to build a solid foundation for mathematics. To ensure this, we used a design and development model that drew from theory and research in each phase. Our design process is based on the assumption that curriculum and software design can and should have an explicit theoretical and empirical found...
متن کاملBuilding Blocks and Cognitive Building Blocks Playing to Know the World Mathematically
The authors explore how children’s play can support the development of the foundations of mathematics learning and how adults can support children’s representation of—and thus the mathematization of—their play. The authors review research about the amount and nature of mathematics found in the free play of children. They briefly discuss how children develop different types of play and describe ...
متن کاملTaking a Hard Look at Concreteness: Do Concrete Objects Help Young Children Learn Symbolic Relations?
concept may be simple and direct but this relation may be, and may reinain, obscure to young children, particularly if the relation is not pointed out explicitly. The second similarity between children's difficulties with our model and with manipulatives is that dual representation is relevant to both. As was true of our model, manipulatives have a dual nature; they are intended to be used as r...
